Hardik Patel Can’t Contest Polls, Gujarat High Court Rejects his Plea, Gujarat HC Refuses to Stay Rioting Case Conviction. Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who joined Congress earlier this month, won’t be able to contest . The Gujarat HC rejected his plea to suspend conviction in a rioting case.

A Visnagar sessions court sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment and he cannot contest elections as per provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Hardik Patel had earlier said that he would move the Supreme Court if the high court fails to pass a verdict soon.

Hardik Patel had joined the Congress two weeks ago in the presence of party president Rahul Gandhi in Ahmedabad.

The Congress is eyeing the sizable Patidar votes for the upcoming polls to revive the party that had drawn a blank in the Lok sabha Election 2014.
